Chess 'N Chase is a local multiplayer game where one player, the "chaser," tries to catch the other, the "runner."
The chaser wins the game if they deplete the runner's HP within the game's time limit. The runner wins if they survive until the end of the time limit. When the chaser catches the runner, they have to play a modified version of chess.
Chess
The match is played on a randomly generated chunk of a chess board. The runner plays white and only gets a king, while the chaser plays black and gets a queen and up to 3 other pieces, depending on the size of the board.
One tile will be marked as the "escape" tile. If the runner's king reaches this tile, they win the match, escape from the chaser, and restore HP. Alternatively, if either player defeats all pieces of the other, they win. When the runner loses, they lose HP.
Each player only gets a few seconds to make a move. If time runs out, the turn is forfeited. Otherwise, the opponent's next turn will have its time limit reduced based on the time remaining at the end of the turn.
The runner gets a limited number of turns to make it to the escape tile. If the runner runs out of turns, the match ends in a draw.
During chess, the game's main timer does not pause.
Chase
The mechanics and rules for this part of the game are a little less fleshed out. The game is played from a top-down perspective in a somewhat maze-like area. Each player has stamina which can be consumed to run. There will be traps and obstacles which players can use to obstruct the other, adding some strategy to the "chase" part of the game.
I was hoping to at least have a playable prototype by May 25th, but working on the project has been more challenging and time-consuming than I expected.
